Born on 6th September 1956, after completing his graduation from Delhi College of Arts in 1979, Torit started to practice painting professionally and become famous for his black and white drawings with political overtures, receiving several National and International recognitions and awards. He was also actively involved with the literary movement of the time.
Initially he started to work in Bengali amateur theatre groups as an actor, set and poster designer. Though at the age of 21, he became the youngest playwright to receive an award in Delhi’s theatre arena, he became unhappy and dissatisfied by the practices in the urban Bengali theatre in Delhi.
It was in 1992 that he became one of the founding members of SANSAPTAK.
From 1982 to present times, Torit Mitra has penned more than 38 plays, majority performed by his group, and is the author to innumerable published articles, short stories and poems. He has also been felicitated several times for being a prolific contemporary writer in Delhi promoting progressive developments in Arts and literature.
